How to Choose a Kettlebell
More and more people are enrolling in functional training workouts resulting in a surge of demand for professionally trained kettlebell instructors. So, if you’re considering fitness training as a career option, you should definitely know more about kettlebell training.
And for that, the first step would be to know more about the history of kettlebell training, sign up for a training course and then buying your first set of kettlebells.
Selecting your First Kettlebells
As a personal trainer trained in kettlebell training, it is an absolute must that you master all the moves and techniques yourself before signing clients. Kettlebells are heavy cast-iron weights that are difficult to handle because of their unique shape. They come in different weights ranging from 4kg to 50kgs!
After all, as the history of kettlebell training shows, they were first used in Russian rural markets to measure different quantities of grains. So if you are about to buy your first kettlebell, do not just go by the size.
Check out first if you are able to handle it comfortably before you hand it over to your clients. You will have to demonstrate the moves and exercises so you should be confident about handling the equipment easily and correctly.
Selecting the Right Weight
As a lady instructor, you can start with a kettlebell weighing 8kg and male instructors can begin with a 16kg weight. Practice a few exercises to know if the kettlebell you are buying is the right size for you.
Stand with feet placed hip-distance apart and hold the kettlebell by its horn with both hands. Squat and dangle the instrument between your legs for a few seconds and then straighten out both legs. You should not be experiencing any discomfort in your shoulders or lower back while doing this if you have selected the right kettlebell.
Stand with feet placed a little wider than hip distance and hold the kettlebell with both hands. Bend knees slightly and swing the apparatus forward as you straighten up in an explosive motion. You should be able to raise the kettlebell to your shoulder height without feeling any pain or stiffness if you are handling the right weight with correct form.
Hold the kettlebell by its horns with one hand and lift it above the head. With the right kettlebell, you should be able to do this without arching the back and hold it in position for a few seconds
It is always advisable, begin with a lighter weight that is easy for you to handle. A heavier weight can not only lead to injuries and aches but will also affect your posture, technique, and confidence.
The Horn
If you study the history of kettlebell training, you will know that kettlebells have been in use for centuries under different names and styles. For the modern kettlebell, most people are interested in selecting the right weight without consideration for the horn.
However, you must always check out the horn for a comfortable grip. A handle with a smooth underside will be easier on your hands and you will be able to do your reps without burning your palms.
